With the assembly elections due in Odisha in early 2019 alongside the parliamentary elections, the bugle has been sounded.

Although there is still time for the Central Election Commission to make necessary notifications for the Lok Sabha and assembly polls in Odisha, political parties in the state have begun their election-related exercises already.

A few media and survey agencies have also started fuelling the political mood of an election through different speculations.

Though the Make in Odisha Conclave 2018 is being termed by the state government as a successful event mainly by virtue of the promises it has drawn, to a lot of Odisha's ordinary population, it failed in many aspects.

Started in Bhubaneswar on November 12, 2018, the event was participated by India’s top industrialists like Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries, Kumarmangalam Birla of Aditya Birla Group, Naveen Jindal of Jindal Steel, Anil Agrawal of Vedanta Resources among many others who for a day made the state capital city the point of highest attention.

BJD mustn't take people of Odisha for granted all the time

Political warmth is on an increasing trend in Odisha as elections are on the head and many expect it to happen earlier than usual.

Confident about its electoral success until a few weeks ago, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) now seems to be worried a lot since dismissal of the veteran politician Dr. Damodar Rout and the speculations following it over formation of another regional political outfit to challenge the ruling party on the lines of the true ideology and dreams of late Biju Patnaik, the legendary person whom people of Odisha consider the icon of pride.

When Political Parties Question Media Neutrality

As the media fraternity in Odisha gets increasingly vocal about protecting freedom of speech and ensuring a free media, a few political parties in the state have decided to stage a confrontation.

While, in the most recent case, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the ruling party of Odisha, has openly declared a boycott of the OTV, alleging that the channel has been carrying news and views intentionally against the interests of the party, nearly a month back part of the media in the state also felt that the Odisha chapter of BJP was planning to boycott another channel, Kalinga TV, for similar reasons. But the BJP didn’t publicly claim a boycott, the way the BJD did on 21 March 2018 through a press conference.

Odisha Farmers Struggle for Survival

The state and central governments are likely to increase the focus on agriculture in their budgets. But the question remains: when will farmers receive the benefits of all these plans and programmes, and more importantly, how will they overcome the present crisis?

Environment lacked attention in Naveen’s Odisha

If Odisha, under the rule of Naveen Patnaik from 2000 to 2015, has achieved significant economic growth, it also carries with it the story of pollution, deforestation and environmental degradation.

Counting on mining, industrialisation and large infrastructure as key sectors for economic development of Odisha, the government under Naveen's leadership has failed to address environmental issues that affect life in most mining and industrial hubs.

Displaced and Deprived

Fifteen years under Naveen Patnaik is often presented as the period of industrialisation and rapid development in Odisha. However, the period has seen massive land grab and large scale displacement as well.
Government’s unilateral approach in development planning and implementation has widened the gulf of mistrust between people and the government bringing the both face to face against each other in almost all project locations over the issue of displacement.

Land grab under DQ: it's all guided by principle!

In view of the involvement of several of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders and ministers of his current as well as the previous cabinet in the land allotment scam in the state of Odisha, one must hail Naveen Patnaik for tracing and inducting so many talented leaders in the party and his cabinet. In spite of the fact that a part of responsible media is genuinely critical about Naveen Patnaik and his government, this letter (in form of a satire) intends to hail Naveen Patnaik for his search of talents that make his cabinet transparent and principled.

Naveen's silence raises more questions about illegal mining in Odisha

Mining outside the lease hold areas without any formal approval and without forest and environmental clearance is the major irregularity in Odisha mining sector that has been continuing at least since last one decade. And, when it comes to forest clearance and approval under environmental protection act, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik himself was the forest and environment Minister for seven years, from May 2004 to May 2011.
